About Us

We are a small family homestay with lovely guest accommodation right in the heart of Ubud - the arts, cultural centre of Bali.

We only have a small number of rooms - and almost always full - so please, if you don't want to be disappointed - call us and make a booking in advance..

Our Visitors

Our guests often arrive for just a few short nights, and end up falling in love with the warmth and culture of Bali. Ubud has grown rapidly over the past three years and has become very much a hub for international arts, literature, music and culture.  This coincides with the abundant wealth of heritage expression of the Ubud area villages - home to some of the most creative and talented artists.

Our visitors often arrive with yoga mats (or purchase one nearby), cameras or notebook computers and iPads to absorb their time. Others may choose to be here to immerse in the traditional heart of Balinese traditions, the fire dances, Barong music and other ceremonies that are a regular part of daily life.

Some of our guests love Ubud to relax in fragrant nurturing spas and walks in the surrounding nature.

Others prefer to use the centrally located village as a base for exploration trips around the island.

Whatever the reason, our visitors keep growing - and keep coming back!

In the heart of Ubud

People of Mai Malu

Mai Malu is the home of Wayan's family.  Wayan is the first born of his generation and shares this ancestral property with his parents, his brother and his wife Putu and their first child.

They are the kinship of Monkey Forest Village - the tourist park itself is just a short walk away.  Ubud area (Utara) comprises many villages that merge together, yet all practice and observe their own ceremonies or annual days.

The Balinese continue to maintain their traditional heritage.  Original Bali Aga centred on Mother Earth, and with the arrival of Hinduism blended into a unique form of Hindu Nature honouring.  Some of the rural village people to this day retain the original essence of Nature honouring only.

The Balinese people are very driven by the phases of the moon, and special ceremonies mark daily events where offerings and prayers are made to the spirit keepers of life.  The most significant ceremonial event is Balinese New Year - called Nyepi.  This is a phase of meditation, quiet and darkness - even tourists are required to respect the tradition.  It occurs on the first day after the first dark/new moon after the Spring Equinox - usually early March.  See our events blog for more info.
